Patriots teams reach CD finals
Junior midfielder James Wittwer scored in the second half to lift the Albemarle boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Massaponax in the Commonwealth District semifinals on Tuesday night.
Wittwer took a pass from Jason Truwit and beat Panthers goalkeeper Wayne Kazanjian for the game’s lone goal with 20 minutes remaining. The Patriots face the Riverbend-Colonial Forge winner in the district final on Thursday.
“Massaponax plays a smart game,” said Albemarle coach Scott Jackson. “They packed in the defense. We got a little unlucky with a few shots we took.”
Baseball: Albemarle 4, North Stafford 3
The Patriots scored all of their runs early on and held on for a win over the Wolverines in the Commonwealth District semifinals.
Albemarle’s Vince Coles went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. Cody Wilder got the win for the Patriots, while Drew Peters and Jake Hochstetler finished off the victory.
The Patriots advance to the district final on Thursday at 6 p.m.
“Thursday, we will just try to battle,” said Albemarle coach Carroll Bickers. “It is a new experience for this group to go to the championship.”
Girls soccer: Fluvanna County 1, Western 0
Sunny Herold scored in the first half to lift the Flying Flucos into the Jefferson District final with a win over the Warriors.
The Flucos will face Charlottesville in the final. The Black Knights defeated Monticello in Tuesday’s other semifinal.
