PREP ROUNDUP: MHS wins region quarterfinal
For the last three years the Monticello boys tennis team has fallen in the quarterfinals Region B tournament 5-4.
On Tuesday the shoe was finally on the other foot, as the Mustangs defeated Handley, 5-4 to advance to the semifinals.
“This is our first regional victory,” said Monticello coach Andrew Whymer. “Our number three doubles team came up huge for us.”
The Mustangs (9-7) and Judges (13-2) split in the singles and the first two doubles games, setting up the thrilling finish.
“Everyone was nervous,” Whymer said. “It was a really evenly-balanced match, and when that happens, it’s about taking advantage of opportunities and getting a couple of lucky breaks.”
Ben Andrechyn and Boris Sikman came up big for Monticello, taking the game in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 7-5) to win the match.
“Handley, when it comes to tennis, is a traditional power,” Whymer said. “But we’re not easily intimidated. Coming from a division that has a team like Western Albemarle, we’ve seen the best.”
Monticello travels to play Briar Woods in the semifinals of the Region B tournament today at 3 p.m.
Boys Lacrosse
Western 14, Broad Run 8
The Western Albemarle boys lacrosse team took care of business and wrapped up the Region II title.
The Warriors jumped out to a six-goal lead in the first half and held on to beat Broad Run, 14-8.
Mack Schwoebel provided the fireworks on offense, scoring five goals and assisting another.
“He initiated the offense from up top and he really took it to the cooker,” said Western coach Hunter Price of Schwoebel. “He’s worked on his explosiveness and its really paying off this season.”
Defensively, Western had its hands full in guarding Sacred Heart-bound Eric Madigan.
Longpoleman Lars Pettygrove was assigned to Madigan and held the playmaker to just one goal and two assists.
“He’s small, but he’s got a real quick first step — he changed directions really fast,” said Pettygrove. “Every time you get a big test like that you try and rise to the occasion — and this kid could really move.”
Max Pfeifer chipped in three goals and assist for the Warriors.
Western next hits the field on May 31.
