PREP ROUNDUP: Orange’s Sacre blanks Mustangs in Jefferson final
In Palmyra, Micalah Sacre tossed a one-hitter to lead Orange County to a 1-0 victory over Monticello in the Jefferson District softball final on Thursday.
Heather Jenkins tripled and scored the game’s only run on a double from Megan Roberts in the second inning.
The win earns the Hornets (19-3) a first-round bye in the Region II tournament. They will host the Park View-Sherando winner on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Utz single completes Albemarle rally
Albemarle scored three runs in the sixth inning to put the finishing touches on a seven-run rally in a 7-6 victory over Brooke Point in the Commonwealth District baseball championship.
Adam Utz had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth for the Patriots (15-7), who were playing their third game in four days. Rashad Talley went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Josh Sites had an RBI.
Albemarle visits Halifax County in the Northwest Region quarterfinals on Monday at 2 p.m.
Buckingham wins JRD title
In Buckingham, Kayla Taylor and Javannah Taylor scored two runs each as Buckingham County beat Randolph-Henry 8-3 to claim the James River District softball championship.
Both Taylors had two hits each, and Marci Christian had two hits and an RBI. Libby Morris struck out 10 batters.
The Knights (13-3) host Gretna in the Region B quarterfinals on Monday at 5 p.m.
Natale’s hat trick, assist keep Patriots perfect
Midfielder Brian Natale had a hand in every goal as the Albemarle boys soccer team blanked Mountain View, 4-0, to claim the Commonwealth District title.
Natale had three goals and assisted Steven Bargh on a fourth.
“Brian is in a pretty good groove right now,” said Albemarle coach Scott Jackson. “He’s been scoring a lot of goals recently. When he gets an opportunity, he just finishes it.”
The Patriots (19-0) host Osbourn Park in the Northwest Region quarterfinals on Monday at 5 p.m.
Western Albemarle advances to Region II final
In Leesburg, Western Albemarle got a true team effort in its victory in the Region II semifinals on Thursday at Loudoun County, 5-4. The Warriors (15-2) will advance to Saturday’s regional final at perennial power John Handley, the two-time defending state champions.
“We’re honored to be competing in the region finals for the second year in a row,” said Warriors coach Betsy Nugent. “It was a great win being on the road, and every girl on the team contributed tonight — that’s what team is all about.”
Tied 3-3 going into doubles, the Warriors’ No. 1 team of Maddie Wilson and Sarah Nugent knocked off Loudoun’s undefeated duo of Megan Hurley and Kerry Sarver, 6-4, 6-4.
“They rebounded nicely after two tough singles losses,” Nugent said.
Albemarle tennis teams reach Northwest Region finals
Ali Angell’s victory over Kelly Flom at No. 4 proved to be the clinching match as the Albemarle girls tennis team defeated Osbourn Park 5-1 in the Northwest Region semifinals.
Angell rallied in the third set to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 and clinch the Patriots’ win. Megan Napolitano, Abby Lesnoff, Elise Lord and Valentina Moshnikova also won singles matches for Albemarle, which sewed up a berth in the Group AAA tournament. The Patriots will host the E.C. Glass/Loudoun Valley winner today at 2 p.m.
The Albemarle boys rolled to a 5-0 win over Liberty in the region semifinals on Thursday, getting singles victories from Quentin Jenkins, Brian Chen, Michael Koenig, Jeff Barton and Will Murray.
The Patriots (19-2) will face E.C. Glass in the region final at 4 p.m. today.
