Saints advance to state final
In Richmond, Chapin Speidel and Michael Morris scored four goals each as the St. Anne’s-Belfield boys lacrosse team defeated Collegiate 18-11 to advance to the VIS Division 1 final.
Owen Van Arsdale added three goals for the defending champion Saints (17-2), who face St. Stephen’s-St. Agnes in the final today at 5 p.m. at Collegiate.
“It’s nice to be able to have the opportunity to win two in a row,” said St. Anne’s coach Doug Tarring.
Van Arsdale had four assists and Speidel added two for St. Anne’s. Goalkeeper Austin Geisler had 18 saves.
Covenant, Tandem advance to final
In Goochland, Covenant and Tandem Friends picked up victories in the VIS Division 2 girls soccer semifinals to set up an all-local showdown for the title.
Tandem, the No. 7 seed, defeated No. 3 Wakefield 2-1 on the strength of a Sidney Hockett goal with 17 minutes left.
“We capitalized on a defensive error,” said Tandem coach John Davis. “The ball bounced over a defender, and our player was able to run onto it and slot it near-post to beat the Wakefield keeper.”
Leci Irvin scored the Badgers’ first goal.
Covenant advanced to the final with a 2-0 win over Denbigh Baptist. The No. 1 Eagles got second-half goals from Hannah Klein and Erin Hauser.
The Badgers and Eagles square off at 11 a.m. today at St. Catherine’s Goochland fields.
Eagles get chance at back-to-back titles
The Covenant boys tennis team is eyeing a second consecutive state championship after blasting Wakefield 9-0 in the VIS Division 2 semifinals.
The Eagles, led by senior co-captains Steve Cho and John Inouye, will take on rival Virginia Episcopal in the title game.
“They are a conference opponent that we’ve played twice this year so there is a rivalry there,” said Covenant coach Dave Dahnert, whose team beat VES twice this season by a score of 6-3. “We played them four times last year so we know they are gunning for us, but our guys will be ready.”
Covenant and VES hit the court at noon today at Pen Park.
Saints rout Oaks to reach girls lacrosse final
In Alexandria, Addi Bolin and Claire Scrivani had four goals apiece to lead St. Anne’s-Belfield to an 18-4 victory over Norfolk Collegiate in the VIS Division 2 girls lacrosse semifinals on Friday night.
Bolin added two assists for St. Anne’s. Kate McCullough had three goals and Holly Reeder added two for the Saints, who face Highland today in the state championship at Episcopal High School.
Western, Fluvanna move on in JD baseball
Western Albemarle advanced to the Jefferson District baseball tournament semifinals with a 9-4 win over No. 7 Charlottesville on Friday.
The No. 2 Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the semis with Dillon Via picking up the win on the mound for WAHS.
In Palmyra, Fluvanna dispatched of Monticello in their first-round showdown with the Mustangs, 3-2.
Tyler Denby went the distance on the mound for the Flucos with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance.
The Flucos will travel to Western Albemarle on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to face the Warriors in the semifinal round of the Jefferson District tournament.
Eagles fall in semifinals
In Petersburg, a first-inning run made the difference for Steward in a 1-0 victory over Covenant in the VIS Division 2 baseball semifinals.
Logan Melton doubled in the winning run for the Spartans, who face Greenbrier Christian in the final today.
“It was a very well-played game,” said Covenant coach Doug Smethurst. “We were just unable to push a run across. We just didn’t get the big hit.”
