Orange County blanks Monroe

The way Orange County starting pitcher Derek Justice was dealing, the Hornets probably didn’t need five runs against William Monroe Friday night at Porterfield Park. Justice got all the run support he needed in the first inning when he helped his own cause with a sacrifice-fly RBI. The rest was icing on the cake.

An inning after Long had reached his pitch count and was removed from the mound, STAB won a battle of the bullpens and the game, edging Notre Dame 3-2 on a walk-off double by Michael Spinosa.

Orange County’s baseball program is making some important strides. While the Hornets lost out on a chance to join archrival Louisa County atop the Jefferson District standings in a
10-3 loss Tuesday night, it’s clear that the Hornets won’t be any pushover as the the district race heads down the stretch.

For a few innings, it appeared Orange County was ready to end several years of frustrating losses and knock off powerhouse rival Louisa County. But a monster double by Louisa’s Dylan Szalankiewicz helped spark a five-run fifth inning that blew apart Orange’s chances.

After battling to a tie through seven innings last night, Fluvanna County used a timely hit from its No. 9 batter and some nifty baserunning to pull out a 6-2 victory in nine innings over Monticello.

Freshmen have their day as Saints win a pair

After pitching a scoreless inning and scoring the winning run in St. Anne’s-Belfield’s 8-7 morning victory over Benedictine, Spinosa and fellow freshman Kevin White hit home runs in the Saints’ afternoon matchup with Maury. He then shut the door on Commodores star Marcus Breeden to clinch a 5-3 STAB victory on Saturday at Perry Field.

Off to an atypical 0-2 start, the Saints got things headed in the right direction Monday night by defeating St. Paul’s, 5-1.
