A team’s offense is only as good as it’s offensive line, and if Fork Union’s first two games are any indication, the Blue Devils are in for a good year.
Fork Union has outscored its first two opponents — Norfolk Academy and St. Anne’s-Belfield — 69-0. Against the Saints on Friday, the Blue Devils had an efficient passing game in a 29-0 victory behind an offensive line that features two Division I commits — Mark Shuman (Virginia Tech) and Russell Bodine (North Carolina).
Quarterback Richard Quittenton was 6 of 11 passing for 159 yards and connected with teammate Akeem Garnett for a touchdown just before halftime.
Quittenton knows to give credit where credit is due.
“I’ve never had a line like that before. It’s a luxury, sometimes you just sit back there and make more than one read,” Quittenton said. “Every pass I have time to break down the defense and it’s all because of them that we’re able to throw the ball successfully.”
Three-headed monster
In addition to its solid passing game, FUMA’s ground attack was effective against the Saints as well. Andre Parker led the way, rushing for 46 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns on nine carries. Louis Litkett added 33 yards on 11 carries, while Antonio Markland chipped in with 14 yards on five carries.
Fork Union coach Micky Sullivan said using the three running backs has many advantages and keeps defenses guessing.
“You have three, and they all bring a little something different,” Sullivan said. “Antonio reads the zone a little bit better, Andre Parker is more of a power guy, Louis has really good speed. So it’s like which one are we going to use now, what are they going to give us. It keeps them fresh.”
Saints moving on
Don’t expect St. Anne’s-Belfield to dwell on Friday’s loss to FUMA. Coach John Blake knows there is still a lot of football to be played this year. In fact, the Saints don’t have much time to regroup – they visit St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes on Thursday.
“Every week’s a new life. You’re playing somebody else — it’s a completely different thing,” Blake said. “If this was a class, you work all week then you have a test on Friday, and that’s what it’s about. We’ll come back out next week and hopefully we pass the test.”
Defense doesn’t rest
Western Albemarle’s defense has been equally as impressive as its offense through its first three games. In their 42-7 win over Albemarle last week, the Warriors forced five turnovers, including four interceptions. Mitchell Parks paced the team with nine tackles, including a sack, while Cody Davis recorded eight tackles and came up with an interception. Tyler Ward did a little bit of everything, as he picked off two Albemarle passes, recovered a fumble and had six tackles. He also had two touchdowns. Christophe Drapanas had an interception, two pass deflections and three tackles.
Offensively, quarterback Stephen Schuler led the way, passing for 196 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target on the night was Dom Losco, who hauled in a 35-yard TD and finished with 79 yards on five catches.
Lions romp past Knights
Louisa County rolled past Spotsylvania last week, putting up 62 points in the win at home. The Lions had no passing yards in its second win, but they didn’t have to as the backfield racked up 350 rushing yards in the game.
Ernie Cross led the way for Louisa, as he piled up 132 yards on 11 carries. He was the game’s only 100-plus rusher, but five other ball carriers rushed for 20 yards or more.
Louisa’s defense and special teams also accounted for several scores, coming up with a safety, a blocked punt recovered in the end zone, a fumble recovery in the end zone and a kickoff return.
Extra points …Monticello’s loss to Huguenot last Friday was its first loss at home since Oct. 21, 2005, when Louisa won 37-7. Since then, the Mustangs had won 21 straight home games. … Monticello’s Nick Kalinsky converted a pair of field goals (38 and 29 yards), tying the school mark for FGs in a game. This year, he is 3 for 3 for field goals and 7 of 7 on PATs. … For the second week in a row, Louisa County’s C.J. Lambert ran back the opening kick for a touchdown. … Fork Union’s defense has not given up any points in eight quarters of play. … Blue Ridge’s Speedy McCauley threw for 197 yards and four touchdowns (two each to A.J. Williams and Roderick Holloway) in the Barons’ 39-8 win over Hargrave.

Congratulation to the team, if they are able to play like that for the whole season, maybe they will be able to enter the MNF. Speaking of MNF, a lot of people are looking for the Monday Night Football scores, as there was a two for one on Monday Night Football on Monday, September 14th, 2009 – as it was the first MNF for the season.  Here are the Monday Night Football scores for you: The Buffalo Bills were pipped at the death by the New England Patriots, 24 – 25, and the San Diego Chargers fought back at the end to defeat the Oakland Raiders 24 – 20.  Two 4th quarter comebacks made for dramatic games, as the Bills started strong and the Raiders punched holes in the Charger’s defense with a punishing running game, but both were beaten at the death of the games.  Hopefully you didn’t put big installment loans on the Bills or Raiders, or the Monday Night Football scores might be bad news.
