Louisa cruises to win over Monroe

STANARDSVILLE — Louisa County used a balanced rushing attack and a complete team effort on Friday night to roll past William Monroe, 56-0. The Lions (3-1, 1-0 Jefferson District) followed up a disappointing loss to Courtland last week by jumping out to a huge early lead that they would not relinquish, and in the process notched a decisive district victory.

“We knew we had to bounce back from a tough loss last week,” said Louisa coach Mark Fischer. “We told the kids, ‘This is when it matters, it’s district play that’s so important.’ I think momentum really jumped on our side and once that happened, the kids really started feeling it.”

It took just three offensive plays for senior tailback Glen Cosby to put Louisa on the board on its opening possession at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter, and it was the beginning of a long evening for Greene Dragons defenders and followers.

Rashawn Jackson then hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass a few minutes later to put Louisa on top 14-0. Sophomore Kire’ Worley scored on a 12-yard scamper with 1:04 remaining in the opening period, and William Monroe (0-4, 0-1) found itself in a huge hole, down 21-0.

The second quarter began with the Dragons’ first first down of the night on a Doug Sizemore fake punt, but Louisa would get the ball back shortly thereafter to continue the onslaught.

On the first play of Louisa’s next possession, senior running back Anthony Hunter scored on a dazzling 85-yard run to push the lead to 27, and open the floodgates. The play appeared to be over, but Hunter made a spin move and darted toward paydirt, breaking several tackles along the way.

“There was really nowhere else to go,” explained Hunter, “I had a person on my right and then someone behind me, and all I could think about was the spin, and it worked out right for me.”

After another Monroe three-and-out, Louisa scored three more touchdowns in just over two minutes, as Ernie Cosby found the end zone twice and Dillon Hollins followed up a 52-yard Jackson run with a 10-yard score. Casey Brown added another tally with 10 seconds left in a first half that saw Louisa rush for over 300 yards and 56 points.

On the night, seven different Lions players found the end zone, which Fischer admitted was business as usual.

The Lions will have their work cut out for them next weekend, as they will travel to Western Albemarle to face an undefeated Warriors squad.
