Madison remains perfect

MADISON — Madison County served notice to every Bull Run District opponent Friday night: The Mountaineers have a passing game, and they will use it.

Stonewall Jackson-Quicksburg put eight defenders in the box all night long, and Madison quarterback Dustin Kirby made them pay in the 48-7 victory over the Generals.

“It’s going to keep them on their toes,” Kirby said. “They know we can do both now so I don’t think it’ll be a smart move — they stack that line up — with the way our line’s been blocking, we’ve got time to throw it.”

Kirby entered the homecoming matchup with 361 yards through the air on 26-for-66 passing with one touchdown and one interception on the season.

The senior signal-caller racked up 173 yards on 7-for-10 passing and three touchdowns on the night, while adding a two-yard rushing touchdown.

“[Kirby] had a real good game,” Mountaineers coach Stuart Dean said. “Couldn’t be happier for him to get that success. That’s only going to help us once we get into district play, really good job by him.”

Kirby found three different receivers for scores, as Dylan Shifflette, Antonio Childress and Logan Terrell found the end zone through the air.

“I just put the ball where it needed to be,” Kirby said. “And they went and got it and did the rest from there.”

Childress lead the receiving corps with two catches for 78 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown catch.

“I was just waiting for it the whole time,” Childress said. “I’m not going to ask for it but when it’s there, [Kirby[ will see it.”

The Mountaineers’ rushing game still had success against the Generals game plan, gaining 226 yards rushing as a team. Terrell led the team with 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

“That’s what we’ve talked about all year and talked about this week,” Dean said. “We wanted to make people defend the whole field and we were able to do that tonight.”

Stonewall Jackson scored on its opening possession of the game, aided by four offside calls and a 15-yard facemask against the Mountaineers. Dylan Dawson capped off the drive with a one-yard score.

“We just had to talk it up,” Childress said. “Get the line to watch the ball.”

Childress snatched up two interceptions on the night, taking the second 75 yards for a touchdown. A.J. Butler picked up 14 tackles and a sack on the night.

“After that first drive, we settled down,” Dean said. “And played attack instead of sit back and try and read.”

Madison County (6-0) heads into its bye week to prepare for its district schedule, starting with George Mason on Oct. 23.
