Mountaineers roll past Cougars

MANASSAS PARK — When the Manassas Park Cougars lined up Friday night, they stared right into the eyes of a senior running back with something to prove.

After sitting out last week’s victory over Strasburg, Logan Terrell was both an unstoppable force and an unmovable object as Madison County rolled to a 41-0 win.

“He ran the ball hard,” said Mountaineers coach Stuart Dean. “He came with great focus — he knew he had to come back out there and prove himself.

“He hit the holes hard and that’s one of the big things that he did to make him successful.”

Terrell bowled over the Cougars for 130 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. He also found the end zone passing and receiving, accounting for 198 yards and four touchdowns of total offense.

“Last week I didn’t get to play, so I came out with a lot of intensity,” Terrell said. “My offensive line did pretty good tonight — it was a good team effort. We were fired up for this game.”

The senior also led the team with 10 tackles on defense as the Mountaineers held Manassas Park to 81 yards of total offense on the night, all on the ground. A.J. Butler and Bradley Meadows each tallied nine tackles.

The Mountaineers set the pace of the game early as it took only six seconds to get on the scoreboard. A short kickoff went untouched by the Cougars and Chris Fincham made them pay by recovering the ball at the Manassas Park 31-yard line.

On the next play, Terrell found Antonio Childress in the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 11:54 left in the first quarter. The Mountaineers then raced out to a 35-0 lead going into the locker room.

“We came with a lot of focus tonight and a lot of intensity,” Dean said. “I think that showed in the way we started off.”

Quarterback Dustin Kirby was 5 for 12 for 114 yards on the night with two touchdowns, while Childress had two catches for 46 yards.

Ralph Yates had 11 carries for 86 yards as the Mountaineers racked up 266 yards on the ground.

Madison County (9-0, 3-0 Bull Run) hosts fellow unbeaten Clarke County (9-0, 3-0) in a de facto district championship game on Friday.

“Next week is where it’s at,” Terrell said. “That’s what we’ve been working for.”
