Mountaineers win big over Panthers

SHENANDOAH — Madison County ventured west for the second week and a row, and this time the Mountaineers took their attack defense with them.

The Mountaineers’ defense sacked Page County quarterback Dakota Wolf nine times on their way to a 35-6 win Friday night.

“That’s the defense we wanted,” Madison County coach Stuart Dean said. “That would attack and get after it. That’s what we didn’t have against Luray last week.”

A.J. Butler led the Madison County defenders with 10 tackles and two sacks on the night. Terez Terrell and Bradley Meadows each had nine tackles, while Devon Boone and Hunter Clark each picked up two sacks.

“We came into practice knowing that we had to step up and we couldn’t play like last week,” Butler said. “And we just didn’t want to let ourselves down on Friday, so we played as a team the whole night.”

The defense held Page County and its spread offense to 124 yards of total offense on the night, with 57 coming on a rushing touchdown by Wolf.

On the offensive side of the ball, Devon Boone was able to take what the Panthers’ defense gave him, producing 137 yards and two touchdowns for the Mountaineers.

“We knew it was a matter of time before everybody overloaded Logan [Terrell] on his side and everybody tried to triple-coverage Dylan Shifflette,” Dean said. “Devon stepped up and took advantage of that.”

Boone’s first touchdown showed the Panthers two distinct running styles. The senior spun by one would-be tackler, and then ran right over the next on his way to a 12-yard score.

“That’s to the line though,” Boone said. “I would have never saw that if the line didn’t get off the ball as they did the whole night. They opened up so much for me and Logan.”

The big play of the night was a 47-yard touchdown pass from Logan Terrell to Antonio Childress — the second week in a row Terrell has thrown a halfback pass for a touchdown.

Page County (0-4) hosts Clarke County next week, while Madison County heads into their homecoming week undefeated at 5-0 as Stonewall Jackson-Quicksburg comes to town.
