Woodberry shines against rival
Woodberry Forest excelled in all facets of the game during its 28-7 win over Prep League foe Fork Union on Saturday.
The Tigers (3-0) amassed 300 total yards of offense — 236 of which came on the ground — and held the Blue Devils scoreless
until the game’s final minutes.
Woodberry’s defense also capitalized on Fork Union’s mistakes. The Tigers recovered a pair of fumbles — one for a touchdown —and recorded two interceptions in the game.
Ade Oyalowo led the defense with 10 tackles, including a sack, while teammate Aramide Olaniyan was in on six stops, including a pair of sacks.
Oyalowo paced the Tigers’ running game with 119 yards on 17 carries. His 50-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was the longest run of the day.
And with one big game behind them, the Tigers are ready for their next test — this Friday at Collegiate. The Cougars (4-0) were ranked No. 2 behind Fork Union in last week’s VISAA football poll.
Co-captain Ed Reynolds is one of 34 seniors on Woodberry’s roster, and the group has one goal in mind.
“As the class of 2010, we told ourselves for senior year we’re going to go and try to have the greatest season we could for Woodberry, and we’re on the right path right now,” said Reynolds, who rushed for 114 yards on 15 carries against FUMA. “We’ll see what happens against Collegiate — that’s a great team. [They’ve been] state champs the past few years, so it will be a good battle in Richmond. We’re excited. We’re going to go watch film, learn from our mistakes and come out and be ready to play.”
Parker paves the way
Fork Union did not have a lot of success moving the football against Woodberry, but one player who was effective against the Tigers’ staunch defense was Andre Parker.
Parker, a native of Madison County, racked up 149 of the Blue Devils 175 rushing yards.
The 6-foot, 202-pounder was able to gain good yardage most of the game, especially on first down plays.
In fact, Parker dashed 28 yards in the game’s opening play. His longest run was 42 yards, which came in the second quarter.
Black Knights’ solid start
After dropping its first two games, Charlottesville has strung together three straight wins and has already topped its win total from last season.
First, the Black Knights upended Group AAA Albemarle, then defeated Jefferson District newcomer Goochland on the road and beat William Monroe this past Friday.
Charlottesville will get a tough test this week as it hosts Western Albemarle, which is also unbeaten in district play and 5-0 overall. It doesn’t get any easier for the Black Knights — the following week they will visit a very good Louisa County team.
