Albemarle High School’s girls soccer team scored an early goal and let its defense do the rest as it dispatched North Stafford, 1-0 in the Commonwealth District quarterfinals on Monday night.
Betsy Haugh scored the first-half goal on an assist from Joy Piirto as the Patriots, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, came away with the win.
“We had a very solid defensive effort from our back four — Megan Heaps, Meg Carpenter, Emma Spellman and Lilly Briedis-Ruiz — and continued strong play from Lucie Hidlay,” said coach John Hall.
Albemarle outshot the visitors 18-12, and Emily Strauss had a strong performance in goal, recording eight saves.
The Patriots (10-5-2) will have to wait to find out their opponent for the semifinals, which will be played Wednesday. They will play either Brooke Point or Riverbend.
Albemarle stays
unbeaten with win
The Albemarle boys soccer team had little trouble advancing past Brooke Point on Monday night, winning the Commonwealth District quarterfinal game 6-1 to stay unbeaten.
“We didn’t have a lull in the season,” said Patriots coach Scott Jackson. “But the guys were ready for the playoffs, and for the coaches it gives us the chance to say, ‘if you lose you’re out’ so it gets the team pumped up.”
Albemarle (17-0) jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Blackhawks best scoring chances came early, but goalkeeper Brandon Agee took care of business.
“Brandon had a couple of nice saves in the first half,” Jackson said. “He saw a couple of tough point blank but stood strong.”
The Patriots will host Massaponax in the semifinals. Albemarle saw two very different Panther teams
earlier this year.
Napolitano advances in individual play
Albemarle sophomore Megan Napolitano notched a pair of victories in singles to advance to the finals of the Northwest Region individual tournament at E.C. Glass on Monday.
Napolitano will face Kiersten Pappas of Loudoun Valley today at 10 a.m. Napolitano handled Sheila Klauk of E.C. Glass and then followed that up by defeating Shanique Alabi of Osbourne Park.
Pairing with fellow sophomore Abby Lesnoff, Napoltano went on to knock off E.C. Glass and advance to the doubles semifinals, starting at 12:30 p.m., where they will face the team from Gar-field. By making the Region final, Napolitano has qualified for the state tournament on June 4.
