In her last at-bat as a member of the Fluvanna County softball team, Danielle Dike demonstrated what being a team player is all about. Trailing eventual Group AA champion Broad Run by seven runs, Flying Flucos coach Nick Ward gave Dike instructions about what to do if she saw a pitch inside.
ALL-CVA SOFTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR: John Henry Ryder, Orange County
The Hornets finished 19-5, falling to Loudoun County in the region quarterfinals, but the team made an impression on Ryder, the 2008 All-Central Virginia softball coach of the year.

Hornets, Flucos reach Jefferson final
Whenever Micalah Sacre enters the circle for the Orange County softball team, the Hornets have a great chance to win. On Tuesday evening, Sacre lead her team not just in the circle, but at the plate as well, in a 2-0 win over William Monroe in the Jefferson District semifinals.

Hornets handle Dragons
The first time William Monroe and Orange County locked up, the Dragons’ batters got the better of Heather Jenkins. Jenkins made sure she got them back Friday night.
The junior hurler allowed just three hits and struck out five in 6.2 innings of work to lead Orange to a 4-2 victory over Monroe.

Covenant softball turns heads in second season
In only its second year in existence as a varsity program, Covenant softball is on the rise thanks to a cornerstone group of seniors and an upstart bunch of young players who are learning and growing — and most importantly improving with each inning.

Monticello traveled to Orange County Friday night for a showdown of two of the Jefferson District’s top pitchers. Orange freshman phenom Micalah Sacre won the battle of the K, but Monticello’s Victoria Scott took home the W.

Patriots fall to Bears
Albemarle hoped to pick up an important district win against a struggling Riverbend squad Wednesday evening. However, the Patriots’ sloppy defensive play put them in a hole they couldn’t dig themselves out of as the Bears eked out a 6-4 win.
