In Fork Union, with a dominating performance in relays, Western Albemarle’s girls swim team wrapped up a Region II title Saturday at Fork Union. Western rolled to the victory with a score of 133 points, besting Central Virginia rival Fluvanna County, who finished as the region runner-ups.
On the boys side, Orange County piled up 79 points to finish second behind Brentsville.
Charlottesville finished sixth in both boys and girls.
The Western girls kicked off the meet with a win in the 200-medley relay powered by Katie Lesermann, Seana Acker, Mattie Webb and Katherine Nicholson. The quartet edged out Potomac Falls by just over a second in the event. The Warriors also won the 200-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter relay. Natalie Cronk, Lesermann, Emma McKinley and Nicholson made up the 200-relay squad that won by almost two seconds, while McKinley, Acker, Webb and Cronk formed the 400-relay team that bested Fluvanna by five seconds.
Nicholson also managed to win the girls 50-meter freestyle sprint by two tenths of a second, while Cronk took home the
100-meter backstroke title and a second-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke. Acker won the 100 breast.
Fluvanna got a strong performance from Chelsea Tomko, who won the
200-meter individual medley even by edging out Acker by four seconds. Tomko also won the 100-meter butterfly
Orange’s Nick Montes de Oca, the Jefferson District swimmer of the year, won the boys 200-meter individual medley. He also finished second in the 400-meter freestyle.
A big chunk of Charlottesville’s boys squad’s points came from Daniel Foky’s two victories in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
In diving, Orange’s Tim Edwards won the boys
one-meter title, besting teammate Robert Edwards, who finished second and Fluvanna’s Devon Stribling, who finished third. On the girls side, Western’s Alex Poletti won the region title, edging out Sarah Bomberger of Fluvanna and Heather Stephenson of William Monroe.
