The University of Virginia is reporting that freshman running back Dominique Wallace will miss the remainder of this season. Wallace injured a foot in Saturday’s loss to Southern Mississippi and will need season-ending surgery.

Virginia Tech became the first two-time winner of the ACC championship game with a 30-12 victory over No. 18 Boston College.

Virginia Tech senior cornerback Victor “Macho” Harris (sprained left foot) is listed as probable for tomorrow’s 1:30 p.m. home opener against Division I-AA Furman, according to Tech’s weekly injury report, released yesterday. On Tuesday, team trainer Mike Goforth said the chance of Harris playing appeared “promising.“

The quarterback situation has gotten most of the attention so far this season at Virginia Tech. But the onus to improve after a season-opening loss to East Carolina is also on the offensive line.

Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said that the decision was made on Saturday and the two quarterbacks were told on Sunday.

.“We’re going to talk about it (today),” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said.

Defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson dropped about 30 pounds. Tight end Greg Boone lost 15. Starting interior offensive linemen Sergio Render, Ryan Shuman and Nick Marshman shed close to 80 pounds combined.

For a change, East Carolina is opening its season with a game — not a catharsis.

Virginia Tech has received two more football commitments for the Class of 2009, plus its first commitment for 2010. All three came after Saturday’s camp for high school players, the first of two events in Blacksburg this summer at which Tech coaches will evaluate potential recruits
