Three football recruits commit to Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has received two more football commitments for the Class of 2009, plus its first commitment for 2010. All three came after Saturday’s camp for high school players, the first of two events in Blacksburg this summer at which Tech coaches will evaluate potential recruits.

The 2009 commitments are Jerrodd Williams, a 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback from D.W. Daniel High in Central, S.C., and James Hopper, a 5-9, 179-pound corner from Seventy-First High in Fayetteville, N.C.

Tech’s only previous 2009 commitment was David Wang, a 6-2, 300-pound defensive tackle who committed in September. Wang, from Stone Bridge High in Ashburn, is the brother of Ed Wang, Tech’s junior offensive tackle.

The 2010 commitment is rising junior Nic Acree, a 6-6, 300-pound defensive tackle from King William High. Acree had scholarship offers from Virginia, Penn State, Maryland, Tennessee and Purdue.

Committing so early is “kind of a load off his shoulders,“ said incoming King William coach Zach Just, Hanover’s former offensive coordinator. “He gets your attention right away just by walking in the room. Realistically, he should dominate for us.“
