Local golfers gear up for Match Play
Five of the 16 players in this weekend’s Central Virginia Match Play Championships at Spring Creek Golf Club will carry winning records from the previous two events into Saturday’s play.
Top-seeded Paul Kane has the most wins in the previous two Central Virginia Match Play competitions with a
4-2 record, followed by Scott Garrison, Jerry Burton, Jeff Toms and Brent Daughtrey all with 3-2 marks over the past two seasons.
The other participants who have competed in one or both of the previous match play events at Spring Creek and their records: Kevin Gibson (2-2); David Passerell (1-1); Brant Dixon (1-1); Bob Rotella (1-2); Neil Davis
(0-1); Jim Higginbotham
(0-1); and Ty Grove (0-2).
Saturday’s opening round begins at 8 a.m., with the second round quarterfinals starting at 1:30. Sunday’s semifinals begin at 8 a.m. with the championship match set for 1:30. If the semifinal losers choose, they will also play for third place at 1:30.
Saturday’s first round pairings: 8 a.m. — (1) Kane vs. (16) TBD, and (8) Dixon vs. (9) Jud Foster; 8:10 — (4) Toms vs. (13) Davis, and (5) Passerell vs. (12) Daughtrey; 8:20 — (2) Burton vs. (15) Rotella, and (7) Grove vs. (10) Higginbotham; 8:30 — (3) Garrison vs. (14) Bill Hamilton, and (6) Brad Ferguson vs. (11) Gibson.
