Another Battle title for Little

With his come-from-behind victory in the Jefferson Cup Invitational golf tournament at Birdwood over the weekend, Nick Little blew away the competition for the top spot in the 2008 Battle Trophy competition’s final standings.

Little, who was presented the trophy on Saturday night at the Jefferson Cup dinner, picked up 25 points for his win on the second playoff hole (the par-4 10th) on Sunday as the Radford University golfer defeated University of Virginia golf coach Bowen Sargent for the title.

It was Little’s fourth local tournament win this season, having captured the Faulconer at Lake Monticello, the Old Trail Team Championship’s individual title, the Kenridge Invitational at Farmington and Birdwood’s Jefferson crown. He claimed the Battle Trophy for the second consecutive year.

With the title, Little also earned the top seed in this weekend’s second annual Central Virginia Match Play Championships at Spring Creek Golf Club near Gordonsville. The top 16 finishers in the Battle standings qualify for the match play event, which will be held Saturday and Sunday. The first round and quarterfinals will be played Saturday, with the semifinals and championship set for Sunday.

Sargent is the defending champion, having defeated Farmington’s Paul Kane in last year’s finals.

Golfers are asked to call or e-mail their intentions on whether they will play in the event by 5 p.m. today (409-3180 or e-mail ) so pairings can be set. Rather than have matches forfeited, the tournament would like to have alternates from the top 21 to fill in for those who cannot play.
