Groves shares first-round lead

In Gordonsville, fresh off a strong performance for Wake Forest in the NCAA championships, Dustin Groves had a strong first day at the Cannon Cup for a share of the lead.

Groves, a Monticello graduate and a junior at Wake, shot a first-round 71 to share the early lead with Jerry Burton and Brent Daughtrey at Spring Creek Golf Club.

Chuck Brewer and former Western Albemarle star Nick Little — now at Radford — each shot a 72. Three players were two shots back at 73 and three others tallied rounds of 74.
