Duke’s offense set for showdown with UVa

Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis is on the minds of Virginia’s defense for this Saturday’s game at Scott Stadium. Lewis, who has thrown for nearly 9,000 yards in his career, isn’t one of the three ACC quarterbacks ranked among the elite in the nation right now. Those honors go to Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor, Miami’s Jacory Harris, and Florida State’s Christian Ponder.

UVa struggles with halftime adjustments

Virginia (3-4, 2-1 ACC) seemed to fail in that respect as the Yellow Jackets outscored the Cavs 21-3 in the final two quarters en route to a 34-9 victory that essentially left Virginia searching for a bowl berth to salvage another season.

A tough road for Bennett

With Virginia’s men’s basketball season opener little more than two weeks away, one would think the fan base would be less than enthusiastic, considering the program is coming off its worst season since they used peach baskets and this edition of Cavaliers were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team ACC.

Don’t expect that from Duke — the Blue Devils rank 5th in the nation in passing, using the run sparingly.

Don’t believe all that you hear

The next time you’re watching a football game on TV and hear one of those brilliant talking heads make the observation that, “those coaches made some great adjustments at halftime,” beware.

Golf’s next treasure

If God were to build the perfect mountain golf course, there would be temptation to borrow a few ideas from Donald Steel’s masterpiece, the Highland Course at Primland, one of Virginia’s hidden treasures.

New rules abound in ‘09

At ACC Media Day on Sunday, John Clougherty, the ACC coordinator of men’s basketball officiating, announced a new rule in which help-defenders will be whistled for fouls if they attempt to take a charge within an 18-24 inch “imaginary” line, extending from the edge of the backboard to the front of the rim.

UNC, Duke co-favorites to win ACC

Last season, UVa was picked by the media to finish 12th in the 12-school ACC. The Cavaliers ended up 11th, and replaced former coach Dave Leitao with Bennett at season’s end.

Georgia Tech gets 1st victory at Scott since 1990

“A lot of guys on the team were challenging me to go full speed and go all-out for the whole game and take every opportunity,” Dwyer said. “[Cook] was there and I was just trying to make a play to get the team fired up.”

October magic can’t lift UVa

Virginia’s October magic and its short-lived lead atop the ACC’s Coastal Division vanished in rain-soaked Scott Stadium on Saturday as Georgia Tech’s triple-option monster cut the Cavaliers to ribbons.

Back at tackle, Collins shines

Virginia coach Al Groh, who doubles as the team’s defensive coordinator, remembered the solid game that Nate Collins had as a nose tackle against Georgia Tech last year in Atlanta and decided, “Why not?”

Big weekend for UVa soccer squads

It’s been a long time since the Virginia men’s and women’s soccer teams both had regular-season games in late October that meant so much.

Thanks to Georgia Tech’s time-consuming offensive prowess, however, the product of Mother Nature was the lone bright spot on a rain-soaked afternoon for Virginia.

UVA NOTES: Randolph flaunts his field-goal range

When Virginia kicker Robert Randolph made a career-long 49-yard field goal through heavy rain late in the first quarter to tie No. 11 Georgia Tech — the ball took a carom off the top of the crossbar — Scott Stadium erupted.

In Friday’s match-up between St. Anne’s-Belfield and Covenant, though, plays from inside the five included three turnovers and two plays for a combined 128 yards. In a sloppy, yet thrilling contest, St. Anne’s made more positives from those plays than Covenant, and that determined the Saints’ 35-21 win.

A battle for the Coastal perch

In most cases, time of possession is one of the most meaningless statistics in football.

Saints slog past Eagles

When the ball is inside the 5-yard line, football strategy is fairly universal. On the opposing team’s goal line, punch it in; from your own goal line, protect the ball and play it safe.

Page runs wild for Monticello

Three proved to be the magic number for Monticello on Friday night, as senior running back C.J. Page — who wears that digit as his uniform number — exploded for three of his four touchdowns in the third quarter to propel the Mustangs to a 34-14 victory against Charlottesville, their fifth straight over the Black Knights.
