Dutch drummer brings jazz to Brooks Hall

Han Bennink has included Charlottesville on his 70th birthday tour. Hear the Dutch drummer and percussionist at 8 tonight in Brooks Hall at the University of Virginia.

The versatile drummer has performed on hundreds of recordings with such performers as South African bassist Harry Miller, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonists Roswell Rudd and Ray Anderson and bandleaders Sean Bergin and Andy Sheppard.

He helped create an improvised music scene in Europe, forming the Instant Composers Pool with pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker.

Although he’s quite at home on a traditional drum kit, his first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. That experience helped fuel his love of performing on unlikely objects found backstage at performance venues.

Tonight’s show, presented by the Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU-FM, will team up Bennink with violinist Mary Oliver and some guest improvisers from the Charlottesville area.

Bennink also will lead a master class this afternoon at Albemarle High School. The class is free and the public is welcome, thanks to a donation in memory of Paul Burns.

Tonight’s concert is $12, $10 for jazz society members and $5 for all students. Parking is available in the Central Grounds Parking Garage on Emmet Street. For details, visit www.cvillejazz.org or call 249-6191.
