Virginia Consort builds concert around challenging works
The Virginia Consort and Consort Festival Chorus will be joined by a full orchestra and professional soloists for a concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Cabell Hall Auditorium.
Listeners will get to hear the “Finale” to Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” and “Prayers of Kirkegaard” by Samuel Barber.
The Beethoven piece is well known, but the Barber is rarely heard in a live performance setting.
Beethoven was unable to hear the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction to the first performance of his exuberant symphony because he had become deaf. One of his soloists turned him around so he could see the audience cheering.
Barber’s challenging work shifts among different meters and includes rhythmic chanting. Though the work is short, it is one of the more difficult works in the singers’ repertoire.
Tickets are available in advance at New Dominion Bookshop, Greenberry’s and both Market Street Wine Shop locations and online at www.virginiaconsort.org. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
