The University of Virginia says the 3,246 students who will move in on Aug. 21 will be among the strongest first-year class yet.

For the first time, more than 90 percent of the incoming students were ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes, compared to 88.8 percent last year.

They scored an average of 1,993 points on the three required parts of the SAT (math, writing and critical reading), compared to 1,984 points last year, and the scores of the middle 50 percent ranged from 1,880 to 2,140, with each end of that range 10 points higher than a year ago.

U.Va. also said more students identified themselves as members of one or more minority groups: 983 this year, or 29.9 percent of the incoming class, compared to last year’s 892, or 27.5 percent of the class. The number of African-American, Hispanic and Native American students remained relatively stable, while the number of students from Asian backgrounds increased by about 25 percent, from 439 in last year’s entering class to 546 this year.

Women account for 55 percent of the class, about the same as last year.

Of the entering class, including transfer students, 69 percent are Virginia residents.

U.Va. received a record 22,516 applications and offered admission to 7,224 students, with a target of 3,240 acceptances.

The university also expects to enroll about 560 transfer students, including 264 from the Virginia Community College System.
