A homeless man was beaten nearly to death at the end of the Downtown Mall and may yet succumb to his injuries, authorities believe.
The man was found Saturday morning in some bushes behind a bus stop between the Omni Charlottesville Hotel and the federal courthouse, said Charlottesville spokesman Ric Barrick.
Robert Kartheiser, the homeless man, is now at the University of Virginia Medical Center, unconscious, with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
His injuries are mostly internal, said Lt. Gary Pleasants.
Because his injuries are so severe, authorities don’t believe he moved much after being assaulted, Barrick said.
Police had seen him at midnight, the night before he was discovered and he looked fine, according to authorities.
Police have few clues so far in the investigation, and have been interviewing other homeless people in an attempt to get a handle on what happened, Pleasants said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the assault to call Crimestoppers at 977-4000.
