15,000 expected for UVa move-in day

Several adjustments in public transportation and traffic routes will take place Saturday because of move-in day at the University of Virginia, when about 15,000 people are estimated to be on campus.

Charlottesville Area Transit will temporarily detour the free “trolley” bus on Saturday. The trolley will not travel south of Emmet Street on Jefferson Park Avenue through UVa’s Central Grounds, including on Alderman and McCormick roads. Rather, the westbound free trolley will travel on Jefferson Park Avenue to Emmet Street, turn right onto University Avenue and return to its usual route at the Rotunda, eastbound.

The trolley will still serve the Emmet Street University Transit Service stops on the detour route from Jefferson Park Avenue to University Avenue.

The detour will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. All riders should expect delays.

More information about CAT or the trolley can be obtained by calling 970-3649 or e-mailing CAT@charlottesville.org.

UVa officials said the University Police Department will use about 24 officers this year to help with the arrival of students, starting around 6 a.m. Saturday and working until most students are moved in over the course of that day.

Officers will direct traffic from the intersection of Emmet Street and the McCormick Road ramp through the intersection at McCormick and Alderman roads to Stadium and Alderman roads.

Regular UTS buses will also not be running Saturday. UVa parking and transportation officials said families will have about a 30-minute grace period to unload vehicles, with workers directing families to open parking spaces. After all vehicles are unloaded, free parking is available all day at Scott Stadium.
