The Charlottesville area has been named the best place to retire by Kiplinger.com, beating out Dothan, Ala.; Palm Bay, Fla.; Pittsburgh; and San Francisco.
The ratings were based on the number of doctors, percentages of population over 65, state taxes and exemptions, crime rates, access to airport and transportation and leisure activities.
Kiplinger researchers cited local art museums, wineries, nearby parks, golf courses and the Downtown Mall as advantages, as well as the area’s proximity to Washington.
Drawbacks included the cost of living, transit system and the fact there are few property tax breaks for retirees.
