A Louisa County jury on Friday found Remone Houchens guilty of all three felony charges for breaking into the home of an 87-year-old woman and beating her so badly she was blinded in one eye.
The jury deliberated for more than five hours beginning Thursday before finding the 20-year-old Houchens guilty of burglary, robbery and aggravated malicious wounding in the attack May 22 on Lois Rosson.
The jury now is deciding on what sentence to recommend. Houchens faces up to life in prison.
Houchens broke into the home shortly before 3 a.m. and punched Rosson repeatedly in a downstairs bedroom early that morning and stole a gun from her home. The beating left Rosson with broken bones in her face, and she was hospitalized for several days.
Louisa Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas A. Garrett Jr. has said that during the attack, Houchens fondled Rosson and told her he would “have sex with her and make sure she’ll never talk.”
Houchens had claimed he “fell through” the victim’s front door while he was running from people who apparently were in the Crips street gang. Authorities have said Houchens is involved with the Bloods, a rival gang.
In June, as a deputy was leading Houchens to court for a bond hearing, the defendant told reporters that he went into Rosson’s home because he needed money.
The victim’s home is a short walk from Houchens’ home in the town of Louisa. Houchens has said he knew one of Rosson’s relatives and that the relative used to talk about things she kept in her home.
Houchens also has claimed he did not hurt Rosson and said she probably got hurt by falling down.
When Houchens broke into Rosson’s home, he cut himself and left behind blood that provided a DNA match implicating him, authorities said. Glass later was found in the soles of his shoes.
