A Virginia Beach hunter was in serious condition after being shot by another member of his hunting party in Nelson County on Thursday, according to officials.

Paul Arnold, 50, was shot in the upper thigh by a bullet from a .270 rifle as he walked away from his stand, said spokeswoman Julia Dixon of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The shot was fired by Johnny Edmonds, 58, of Alberta, she said.

Dixon characterized Arnold’s condition as stable Friday, while the University of Virginia Medical Center listed him in serious condition.

Arnold was airlifted to the trauma center at the University of Virginia Medical Center, according to Dixon.

The incident is under investigation by officers from the game department, Dixon said.
