Edison2's two mainstream class Very Light Cars are taking the track to undergo highway fuel efficiency testing. The cars, which weigh just over 700 pounds, must show they can achieve 100 miles per gallon of fuel. In previous rounds of testing, one of the four-seat mainstream Very Light Cars was recorded at 101.4 miles per gallon.
Edison2's cars are the only contenders left in the mainstream category of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize competion to build a viable 100 mile per gallon vehicle. If the team survives this round and a validation stage next month, it will win a $5 million prize.
Sharing the track with Edison2's two Very Light Cars at the Michigan International Speedway are three others vehicles from other categories. One if from Aptera of San Diego, Calif., one is called the TW4XP from Germany and one is from Team Li-Ion from Mooresville, N.C.
