The yellow light at the Rio Road/U.S. 29 intersection is about to become a little more ominous.
The newly installed, repeatedly delayed red-light cameras at the intersection will go live at 1 a.m. Friday, Albemarle County officials announced today.
For the first 30 days, violators will receive only warning notices. After that, they'll be slapped with a $50 fine.
There are no court costs, and no points are assessed against the violator's driver's license.
Vehicles that enter the intersection a half second after the light turns red will trigger the automatic cameras. The vehicle is photographed three times -- once to show the light was red, once to show the vehicle's license plate and a third time to show the vehicle in the intersection while the light was red.
In addition, a 12-second video is produced.
After the evidence is reviewed by a police officer, the violator will receive unwanted correspondence from the county in the mail.
Violators will have the opportunity to review the evidence against them online and appeal the civil fine in court.
The camera installation was recently completed after being delayed by utility trouble and uncooperative weather.
