The City Council has chosen a finalist to become Charlottesville’s next city manager, Mayor Dave Norris confirmed Tuesday, but officials are not releasing the person’s name pending employment negotiations.
Councilors met in a closed meeting Tuesday morning to discuss the position. The three finalists in the running were Maurice Jones, the city’s acting city manager; Richard Brown, the city manager of East Providence, R.I.; and Paula Hertwig Hopkins, an assistant city manager of Columbia, Mo.
Hopkins said Tuesday afternoon that she had not yet been contacted by the city, and Jones also said he has received no indication one way or another about an offer. Brown would not comment beyond confirming that he was one of three finalists.
Initially, 80 people applied for the job.
The city manager is the city’s full-time CEO. While the city has a mayor, the title is largely honorific.
The city manager, on the other hand, is the main person responsible for developing each year’s budget — proposing how much money the city gives to schools, the police department and other essential services — and also oversees all city departments and the implementation of the City Council’s policies.
Former City Manager Gary O’Connell left the post in April after holding it for close to 15 years. Before that, he was also the city’s deputy city manager, and he now works as the executive director of the Albemarle County Service Authority.
