Charlottesville police are looking into an attack on a woman waiting for a ride early Saturday near Rugby Road, the latest in a string of crimes in the University of Virginia area.
According to authorities, the woman had called UVa’s SafeRide program for a ride around 3 a.m. Someone grabbed her from behind as she was walking on Barracks Road near Rugby, police said, but she was able to fight him off.
The UVa area has been the site of several recent attacks. On Sept. 17, after a night out, a student arrived home with blood and vomit on her, authorities said. Police are investigating whether she was sexually assaulted.
On Sept. 18, a UVa student was punched in the neck on the Corner. Officials have said the man didn’t know his attackers but suspected he was attacked because of his sexual orientation. A day later, UVa officials believe, a man tried to sexually assault a woman at a fraternity party, but the woman’s screams brought help.
Carlton Arnold will face a grand jury on Monday in connection with a Sept. 29 robbery and unwanted touching of a UVa student. The woman testified Thursday in Charlottesville General District Court that the man demanded money from her while she was on 15th Street. After several unsuccessful attempts at getting the man money from a bank and stores on the Corner, the woman said, she was able to get some cash back from a CVS transaction. The woman, who was uninjured, testified that the man left after she started loudly telling him that she had already given him money and told him to leave her alone.
Police still are investigating a report of a forcible fondling on Tuesday night. A UVa student told police that she was walking near Memorial Gym when a white man came up behind her, pulled up her skirt and fondled her. Authorities said the man ran behind the gym after the woman screamed.
No description of the alleged attacker in Saturday’s incident was available. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Crimestoppers at 977-4000.
