A Charlottesville man was shot early Sunday morning on 13th Street near the University of Virginia, prompting a warning to UVa students to stay alert and avoid isolated areas late at night.
The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening wounds in the incident that occurred at roughly 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Charlottesville police are investigating the shooting, though they did not release any details about it Sunday. UVa Police Chief Michael Gibson sent an e-mail to students notifying them about the incident.
“Charlottesville Police believe the incident occurred between two separate groups that may have been known to each other,” Gibson wrote. “One individual, a resident of Charlottesville, was struck by a bullet. He fled the scene on foot to the University of Virginia Medical Center.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimestoppers at 977-4000 or the Charlottesville Police Department at 970-3280.
Charlottesville and UVa police will increase patrols in the area, Gibson said.
Gibson’s e-mail did not say if anyone has been arrested in the shooting. A Charlottesville police sergeant said investigators would not release information on the incident before this morning.
