Jinx alert! Now that that headline is actually in print, we’re wondering if we should have even gone there. But now it is too late, so let’s proceed with confidence: This could very well be the year for Brian Boland’s men’s tennis team at the University of Virginia to bring home an NCAA title. It could well be the year for Brian O’Connor’s baseball team to return to the College World Series and, and … and win it all?
Boland’s team has come close in recent seasons. He’s seen an individual Cavalier, Somdev Devvarman, win the singles national title (twice). But no coveted team title yet. The baseball team, meanwhile, advanced to the College World Series two years ago, and just missed a return to Omaha last season.
As of this writing, each team is ranked No. 1 in the nation, playing with verve and purpose. Simply put, they’re dropping the hammer during the regular season. Instead of jinx alert, we’re thinking this is more of a spoiler alert.
