Central Virginia’s unemployment rate, and the total number of people unemployed, dropped between September and October while the number of people holding jobs increased, according to information released Tuesday by the Virginia Employment Commission.
Figures for the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area released by the commission show unemployment in October dropped to 5 percent from September’s 5.4 percent. The figure is also less than the unemployment rate for October 2010, which was 5.3 percent.
The number of unemployed people dropped from 6,023 in September to 5,618 in October and the number of people with jobs increased from September’s 105,644 to 106,801 in October. The number of people in the job market also increased from 111,667 to 112,419.
Virginia’s unemployment rate fell from 6.4 percent in September to 6 percent in October. The national unemployment rate for November was at 8.6 percent, the lowest level since March 2009.
Albemarle County’s unemployment fell by half of a percentage point between October and September, falling from 5.2 percent to 4.7 percent.
Charlottesville’s rate also dropped, falling from September’s 6.1 percent to 5.7 percent in October.
October unemployment rates for other Central Virginia localities were: Buckingham County, 7.4 percent; Fluvanna County, 5 percent; Greene County, 5.2 percent; Louisa County, 6.7 percent; Madison County, 4.7 percent; Nelson County, 4.8 percent; and Orange County, 6.5 percent.
