First Night Virginia will light the way to 2012 with a laser show.
The Lasertainment show will be presented twice at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Dec. 31 at First Night, organizers of the community New Year’s Eve celebration announced Friday.
First Night officials announced Friday that the city of Charlottesville will be teaming up with First Night to present the laser show. First Night, which marks its 30th anniversary in 2012, will be the kickoff event for the city’s 250th anniversary observances.
First Night events at the Pavilion will include the start of the inaugural First Night 5K at 11 a.m.; the city’s “Celebrate 250” photo presentation at 4 p.m.; the city’s 250 Ceremony at 6:15 p.m.; the early Lasertainment laser show at 7 p.m.; the televised Chik-fil-A Bowl game featuring the University of Virginia football team at 7:30 p.m.; a concert by the Gladstones at 11 p.m.; and the second laser light show and ball drop at midnight.
Other events will be offered on the Downtown Mall and in surrounding downtown venues. Mark Nizer will present his comedy and juggling feats in three shows at the Paramount, where Bone Hampton will perform twice.
Other performers include the Downbeat Project, Soul Transit Authority, Bent Theatre, Jeffersonland Barbershop Chorus, Albemarle Pipe and Drums, the Deanes, Billy Caldwell, In Vivo String Quartet, Janet Muse and Mike Dunn, Groove Train, magician Eric Jones and Dr. Levine and the Dreaded Blues Lady. There also will be performances by Barefoot Puppets, Monkeys in the House, Buffalo Bill and Captain Shiny Pants.
Wristbands, which are worn from event to event as proof of admission, are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 15 and $35 for a family pack of two adult and two children’s tickets through Dec. 30.
Starting Dec. 31, prices rise to $18 for adults and $42 for the family pack, and will be sold only at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel.
Through Dec. 30, wristbands will be available at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, Carpet Plus, Charlottesville Running Company, F Stop Photo, Paramount Theater, Plan 9, Timberlake’s Drug Store, Virginia Discovery Museum and Volvo of Charlottesville.
Volunteers who sign up to help for two hours get free wristbands and can join the party when their work is done.
First Night participants also will get free admission to the Virginia Discovery Museum, half-priced general skating at Main Street Arena and free parking in the Water Street and Market Street garages.
