A member of a local parent teacher organization has been appointed to an open seat on the Albemarle County School Board.
Jason Buyaki was appointed Wednesday night by a 4-2 vote, beating out two other candidates for the position.
John Dawson and Franklin Micciche Jr. also competed for the seat but lost to Buyaki. Stephanie DeNicola and Kirk Bowers had applied but removed themselves from consideration.
The candidates fielded questions from School Board members, some of which were written by members of the public, on Wednesday about the approach they’d take to governing the school division.
The Rivanna district seat was left open by Ronnie Price Sr., who retired to take a job in Utah.
Buyaki said among his mission as a School Board member, he would look for ways to reduce wasteful spending, instead of cutting vital services. He said he would also prioritize efforts for the school division to identify and keep outstanding teachers.
Buyaki fell far short of saying simply what he thought board members wanted to hear. He even criticized the decision to appoint a replacement for Price instead of holding a special election.
Buyaki’s term expires at the end of 2011. He said that he had decided to run for election in the fall regardless of whether he earned the appointment.
Buyaki is a father of two elementary school students, as well as two future students.
He’s a member of the Stony Point Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, and he’s a representative for Stony Point Elementary on the Parent Council.
