Frederick Epstein, a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering, will become the chair of the University of Virginia’s Department of Biomedical Engineering.
“Professor Epstein brings to this position a deep understanding of the collaboration between the engineering school and the medical school which have helped create one of the highest-ranked biomedical engineering departments in the country,” said James H. Aylor, dean of UVa’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, in a statement.
Epstein has said he hopes to increase outside funding for and collaboration with the department, as well as promoting translational research, which moves academic breakthroughs closer to the commercial market.
