The seven Democratic candidates in this year’s Charlottesville City Council election will share the same stage tonight to outline their visions for the city’s future.
The Daily Progress and Charlottesville Tomorrow will host a candidate forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Burley Middle School on Rose Hill Drive.
Incumbent Councilor Satyendra Huja, fitness-club owner James Halfaday, city School Board member Kathy Galvin, homebuilder and developer Paul Beyer, former city School Board chairwoman Dede Smith, University of Virginia media-relations writer Brevy Cannon and city School Board member Colette Blount are competing for three Democratic nominations that will be up for grabs at the party’s August primary.
The council has been long dominated by Democrats, which makes the party primary a key event in any election cycle.
The forum will kick off with a moderator introduction, followed by two-minute opening statements by each candidate. The format includes time for a quick-answer round, moderator questions, audience questions and a round in which the candidates themselves will be able to ask questions of their opponents.
The Democratic Party’s “firehouse primary” will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Burley.
The filing deadline for the Democratic primary passed on July 8.
Four independents — Bob Fenwick, Scott Bandy, Brandon Collins and Andrew Williams — are also running. No Republican candidates have announced. Other candidates can submit paperwork to the city’s registrar until Aug. 23.
A similar forum will be held later this year that will include all candidates participating in the Nov. 8 general election.
