Charlottesville City Council candidate Brandon Collins called Thursday for the immediate disclosure of the state’s new plans for the Meadow Creek Parkway and insisted that construction be delayed until after this year’s election.
Collins, who describes himself as a socialist candidate, said no construction should begin in McIntire Park until any new plans are available for review by the public and the council.
“VDOT’s sudden change of location for the McIntire Road Extended is an effort to avoid a court issued injunction and suggests that the plans for the Meadow Creek Parkway in its entirety, including McIntire Road Extended and the Interchange at the 250 Bypass, is in violation of U.S. environmental law,” Collins said in a statement.
Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pulled a permit for the section of the road that would run through McIntire Park after VDOT chose to modify the road to avoid putting a box culvert through an unnamed tributary of Schenk’s Branch. The change came one day before a federal judge was set to hear a request for an injunction that would have blocked the road’s construction.
Collins said he stands with the Coalition to Preserve McIntire Park, a group that has filed legal challenges against the road and demanded more information about the modified design.
“I call for VDOT to release the new plans, for a renewed process that includes public input and for no construction to begin until a new Charlottesville City Council is seated in January 2012,” Collins said.
