Virus shuts down Louisa shelter

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Louisa County Animal Shelter has shut down after unconfirmed reports that two puppies who spent time in the shelter died from canine parvovirus.

The facility will be closed through June 21 so that it can be scrubbed to eradicate any parvovirus there. The dogs will be quarantined and observed.

Adoptions will be on hold, but the shelter will remain fully staffed and will continue to accept animals.

Parvovirus is a contagious disease that is spread through feces. Infections attacking the heart lead to a brief period of difficult breathing followed by death. Infections attacking the intestines — which are more common — act through severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea.

Anyone with questions can call the shelter at (540) 894-4219.
