Two 14-year-olds arrested in downtown mob assaults

The two 14-year-old males have been charged with two counts of assault by mob, according to a news release from the Charlottesville Police Department.

The arrests come more than a month after police were called to McGuffey Park in reference to a fight between two large groups of people.

“This all started over ice tea thrown from a cup,” said Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts on Tuesday. “The case is still under investigation and there could be more arrests.”

The fight stemmed from one person throwing ice tea on another person and then it grew, Roberts said. The one-on-one dispute quickly turned verbal and then grew to a large crowd.

The fight moved from the Downtown Mall to McGuffey Park, the release said.

The two victims in the case received minor injuries, Roberts said.

“There is no evidence of this being a gang-related incident,” Roberts said.

Police have stepped up police presence at the Downtown Mall in the last month since the attacks and will continue to do, Roberts said.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 977-4000.
