MADISON — Sweely Estate Winery was once again saved from the auction block. The sale of the winery, which was set for last week in front of the Madison County Circuit Court office, was canceled shortly before the auction was set to occur, Tranzon Fox Vice President Jeff Stein confirmed.
Tranzon Fox is the Virginia Beach auction company that had scheduled the auction.
Jess Sweely, co-owner of the winery, declined to comment for this story.
Nick Schandlbauer, the bank attorney who handles the credit for Sun Trust bank, also declined to comment.
The winery-vineyard was in foreclosure for the second time in less than a year.
The 295-acre site is off Wolftown-Hood Road (Route 230) between Wolftown and Oak Hill in Madison County.
Jess and Sharon Sweely opened the vineyard and winery as Acorn Hill Winery in 2007 and expanded it in 2008, according to previous reports. The winery name was changed in 2008 because it reportedly closely resembled the name of another established winery.
Central Virginia winery foreclosures have been in the news in recent months with Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard property being bought by billionaire TV personality Donald Trump recently.
Cox reports for the Madison County Eagle.
