Congratulations to Virginia Gardner and Supervisor Ann Mallek for finally getting someone to take responsibility for the illegal dumping at the reservoir pull-off in Earlysville. Although "swift cleanup" is a little disingenuous, considering this has been a dumping site for 27 years.
I lived at the corner of Bleak House and Reas Ford Road for 21 years, and couldn’t interest anyone in the city, county, or water authority to do anything, much less clean it up. I was told to contact the police if I saw any "illegal activity." In addition to the appliances, mattresses, and deer carcasses, there was automotive waste in the form of leaking batteries, motor oil and antifreeze. There was construction waste, including asphalt, shingles and concrete. People threw bags of garbage over the hill, as well as enough bottles and cans to fill a large dumpster. There were two abandoned vehicles down near the waterline for months.
I’m gratified that something is finally being done, but 26 years have been wasted not monitoring a site that could have been a source of recreation and beauty that the entire community could have enjoyed.
