The Waynesboro Schools administration and school board will cut just over $108,000 in next year’s budget that was from a district fund balance Waynesboro City Council has indicated the city will keep.
Superintendent Robin Crowder said he and staff would look to cut from non-salary areas of the 2011-12 budget that would have the least impact on the school district’s students.
Crowder said the cuts to offset the $108,485 could come in areas ranging from course reimbursement to maintenance.
“We have cut non-salary so far, but that is more than likely where we will want to go,” said Crowder.
Crowder said traditionally, fund balances have been used to improve the look of schools and classrooms.
Waynesboro School Board member Jeremy Taylor said the choices are few for the school board.
“We will make the cuts where they hurt the least,” he said.
The total fund balance from the 2009-10 schools budget was $314,000. The council voted earlier this week to keep all of it. The school district had budgeted to receive about a third.
A majority of council wants to allocate the fund balance for the debt on the Kate Collins Middle School renovation.
