Montpelier to celebrate Constitution Day

»  Comments | Post a Comment

People can celebrate National Constitution Day at Montpelier, the home of the Father of the Constitution, on Saturday.

To celebrate the 224th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution, officials will host a day of festivities that will include a visit from the Madisons, hayrides, colonial games, music from the Quantico Marine Corps Band and fireworks.

Entrance fees to the site on that day will be $10 per car or $5 per car for Orange County residents, according to a news release from Montpelier.

Montpelier is a meaningful place to celebrate Constitution Day,” said Michael C. Quinn, president of James Madison’s Montpelier. “Here, in his second floor library, James Madison envisioned the framework of the document that defines our nation. We hope that on Constitution Day visitors will celebrate this time-tested document that has safeguarded our nation and guaranteed our citizens’ liberties for more than two centuries.”

Also, the Center for the Constitution at Montpelier is also offering a free online class on the Constitution. Students will learn the history and the make-up of the Constitution through seven modules.

“Last year, the Center for the Constitution’s State of the Constitution: What Americans Know survey revealed that only 31 percent of respondents feel they have a strong understanding of the Constitution,” said Kelly Carmichael Booz, director of civic education for the Center for the Constitution. “We are offering this free course to educators and the general public so that anyone anywhere can choose to take advantage of the Center’s knowledge base and learn more about the Constitution.”
