The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia on Tuesday awarded area resident and center board member Anne Worrell with the Elizabeth Scott Award for Exemplary Leadership.
The award recognizes and thanks individuals for their efforts on behalf of the Miller Center, the university and the local community.
Worrell is a former newspaper executive and current community leader and philanthropist with a strong interest in education, historic preservation and public affairs. She and her late husband, T. Eugene “Gene” Worrell, formerly owned and operated Bristol Newspapers Inc., Worrell Investment Company and the Worrell Land and Development Company.
Worrell oversees the Genan Foundation and is a past director of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Foundation, an alumna and former trustee of Virginia Intermont College and honorary vice chairwoman of the Virginia Historical Society.
