It’s the little things that get you.

Such was the case for an escaped inmate in Portsmouth.

Police say 31-year-old Anthony Thomas Ruffin failed to return to custody last month while on a work release program. Portsmouth police were looking for him.

Newport News police weren’t exactly looking for bicycle law violators, but they spotted one this week when they saw a man illegally riding on the sidewalk.

Apparently, it was our Mr. Ruffin.

Police say he gave false information, but they were able to determine his true identity and arrest him.

Police say he had a couple of months left on his sentence for a drug violation.

Just a couple of months. On a work release program. And still he chose to run.

Or, bicycle …
