Let's hope there are others out there

The Jan. 16 Daily Progress editorial page cartoon, depicting a father and son studying the night sky, was a welcome change from the usual negative political cartoons. Thanks for directing our attention to the heavens. We can only dream that somewhere out there are people far more advanced than us, who can offer us solid advice on how to prevent and cure cancer and other human diseases, how to create peace with no wars or terrorists, how to resolve our national money problems, and how to preserve the wonderful home that we call earth.

Launched in 2009, NASA’s Kepler satellite was designed specifically to locate other earths. Thousands have already been found. The most promising “earth” found out there was identified last month. This planet is simply named “Kepler 22b.” It has a vast liquid water ocean, and an average temperature of 72 degrees. Sometime in the near future, National Geographic may have a ball showing us all the sea creatures living on Kepler 22b!

We truly are own worst enemies. Let’s hope that advanced people soon find us before we destroy ourselves. Let’s continue to dream and hope that our dreams will become realities. We have so much to look forward to.
