The Brown v. Board of Education Scholarship Committee is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year.
The Virginia General Assembly established the scholarship program in 2004 to assist people who lived in localities that closed public schools to avoid desegregation as part of the state’s Massive Resistance.
To be eligible for the scholarship program, applicants must have been enrolled or eligible to enroll in public schools in Charlottesville, Arlington, Norfolk or Prince Edward and Warren counties between 1954 and 1956. Applicants must also be current residents of Virginia.
Scholarships may be used to cover the costs of tuition, fees and textbooks at accredited Virginia public schools and institutions of higher education and nonprofit career and technical schools.
The scholarships may be used by those seeking transitional education programs to prepare for GED and adult education programs, a GED certificate or adult high school diploma, College Level Examination Program credit, career-technical skills training at public two-year colleges or nonprofit career and technical schools, a two-year or four-year undergraduate degree at accredited Virginia public and private institutions and master’s, doctoral and professional degrees.
Scholarships are awarded to cover the full amount of students’ tuition and fees. Students are also allotted book allowances.
Application packets, which must be submitted by March 1, are available at http://dls.state.va.us/brown.htm.
